How to get to the Largo Canyon School
Largo Canyon is in NW New Mexico. Our nearest “city” is the Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield metroplex. We are 140 miles north of Albuquerque, 20+ miles off the pavement of either Highway 44 or Highway 64.
Most of the time it is possible to drive here in a high clearance vehicle. In good weather, with some slow and careful driving, some cars can negotiate the sand-traps, washboard, mudholes, arroyos, and gaping holes. We don’t mind helping guests get a safe place to park near the pavement and bringing people in by 4-wheel drive. Sometimes its convenient to fetch guests from the airport in Albuquerque or Durango, but that has to be arranged well in advance.
If you’re going to drive in, don’t try to cross any running “streams” without getting out and walking across them first — the bottoms of the arroyos wash out to form gullies about 2 ft deep lower than the normal road surface. People lose vehicles to quicksand around here.
The bridge over the Largo has been permanently closed. You must come in from Bloomfield on the 4490 road.
Call before you leave the pavement so that we can go look for you if you get lost. 505-333-8577
